Indoor entertainment spaces like cinemas, museums, theatres, and sporting venues have been open since 17 May, plus, live events are back – albeit with capacity and social distancing measures in place.
Capacity for events is limited to 1,000 people indoors (or 50% of the venue’s capacity if lower), 4,000 outdoors (or 50% of the site’s capacity if lower), and 10,000 (or 25% of the venue’s seated capacity if lower) for large spaces like stadiums.
Things are definitely moving in the right direction, however Boris Johnson is coming under increasing pressure to delay the planned ending of the lockdown restrictions on 21st June due to the spread of the Indian variant of Covid-19. He must decide by June 14 whether England will complete its fourth and final stage of England’s unlocking from coronavirus restrictions on June 21st. Some scientists have been urging the Prime minister to delay the lifting of restrictions on large gatherings, nightclubs, and the need for social distancing and mask-wearing rules inside pubs and restaurants.
Businesses and some MPs however have warned of the impact on the public’s mental health, as well as the hard-hit hospitality industry which is already on a precipice. Kate Nicholls, the chief executive of industry body UK Hospitality, warned that any delay would be “devastating” for the sector and push businesses “closer to the cliff edge of business failure”.
The great news is that the latest figures show that more than 39 million people have been given a first jab and a further 25.3 million have had both doses. Around half of over-50s have had two jabs. 75% of adults in the UK will have had their first jab by end of Wednesday (02 June)
