In the UK,  it is estimated that 60-70% of all conference and meeting bookings are made via intermediaries (venue finding agencies) – Conference News 06/21. Venues, be it hotels or specialised spaces, are incentivised to work closely with these intermediaries, as they are the people who bring business to the venue or hotel. They save the venue/hotel money as they don’t have to market their facilities so widely, and they are dealing with professional buyers etc.  The majority of venues are committed to never offering a lower rate to clients direct, as opposed to via an agency. This has been formalised by the industry bodies, the MIA and the HBAA.  (Check if your venue is a member of one of these bodies – all the large chains are).   In return for this stream of business, venues pay agents 8-10% of the booking value.
